The Philosophical Originality of a Theologian
The Case of a Patristic Author Forgotten and Overlooked by History
Abstract
In the present paper I would like to explore the possible reasons behind low evaluation of philosophical potential of Byzantine theological thought, which in contemporary studies frequently is seen as lacking philosophical depth and originality. The ultimate question, however, is whether theology may contain original and valuable philosophy. In order to scrutinize those issues, I propose an analysis of an important case of John of Damascus’ heritage, which, in my opinion, provides actual answers to those questions.
